Intro
Christian Hanz Lozada (he/him) is the author of the poetry book He’s a Color, Until He’s Not (Moon Tide Press), a poignant collection exploring conflicting identities, loves, and traumas that weave the American experience, and co-authored the collection Leave With More Than You Came With (Arroyo Seco Press), and the photographic history book Hawaiians in Los Angeles (Arcadia Publishing). His Pushcart and Best of the Net nominated poetry have been published in over 60 journals and anthologies on five continents in such publications as Zocalo Public Square, Cultural Daily,Bamboo Ridge, and Emerson Review. Christian has presented, featured, or workshopped all over California, LA County and City proper at places like the Twin Towers Correctional Facility, the Autry Museum, Beyond Baroque, and various public libraries including Torrance, Cerritos, Long Beach, and Palos Verdes to name a few.
His love for Los Angeles bloomed upon moving to and exploring the history of San Pedro, which led to opening and running a bookstore focused on LA writing culture and striving to replace Williams Bookstore, the oldest bookstore in Los Angeles. His love for libraries bloomed while assisting his spouse, Lessa Kanani’opua Pelayo-Lozada, become the youngest and first Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander American Library Association President and current director of Glendale Library, Arts, and Culture by adding poetry when the moment is right, taking care of a menagerie of pets, and being a pretty good ear.

Work
He uses his MFA from CSULB to grow a culture of poetry in San Pedro and to teach his neighbors and their kids at Los Angeles Harbor College where he also helps run LA Community College’s first program serving Asian American and Pacific Islander students for 10 years and counting. In his time working for LACCD, he has helped with writing festivals, student-centered publications, monthly open mics and writing workshops with paid visiting writers. He has worked on the boards for National Pacific Islander Educators Network and the San Pedro Heritage Museum
He is currently working on a hybrid poetry and history book San Pedro and Charles Bukowski. As the son of an immigrant Filipino and a Tennessean Daughter of the American Revolution who met in Los Angeles, Christian’s heart knows the shape of hope and exclusion.
